Les Enfants du Paradis
The Children of Paradise
Marcel Carné  •  France  •   1945
190 mins  • BR  •   Exempt
In French, with English subtitles

The movie is not a historical epic but a sophisticated, cynical portrait of actors, murderers, swindlers, pickpockets, prostitutes, impresarios and the decadent rich.
Many of the characters are based on real people, as is its milieu of nightclubs, dives and dens, theaters high and low, and the hiding places of the unsavory. - Roger Ebert

Marcel Carnés masterpiece, made under impossible conditions during France's Occupation in WWII, is an exquisitely poetic film about the nature and forms of love and the relation between art and life.
-Emanuel Levy

Even Truffaut conceded in the end: 'I have made 23 films, well, I would swap them all for the chance to have made Les enfants du paradis'.

- Eithne Farry
