REVIEWS

This well-regarded New Zealand feature film received considerable praise from Quentin Tarantino during his 2016 visit, as reported by film stalwart and former National Radio film reviewer Richard Swainson,
“Fulsome praise was also given to Mr Wrong, Gaylene Preston’s 1986 feminist horror, as much for its leading lady as its style. Tarantino’s point was this: that Hollywood would never cast an actress for her talent and everyday, realistic looks” (Richard Swainson, ‘Meeting Tarantino’, Waikato Times Jan 26, 2016)
Mr Wrong is a film which has worn well over the ensuing decades, addressing issues young women still face when they venture out into the unknown. It is also innovative and entertaining, and represents the beginnings of a brilliant career in creating New Zealand films by Gaylene.

In director Gaylene Preston's genre-bending tale, Meg (Heather Bolton) buys a stylish old Jaguar so she can be more independent. While driving on a country road, she hears screams in the back – but there's no one there. In the excerpt above, she picks up a mysterious woman in the rain. Later she discovers that the woman was the car's previous owner, and she is missing. Now her killer might just be stalking Meg too. For their first, acclaimed feature, Preston and producer Robin Laing rented out local cinemas, conclusively proving that Mr Wrong had an audience.
