Veteran Documentary Corps director Daniel Bernardi presents ten-minute documentaries revealing the diverse experiences of World War I men and women including French Air Force pilot Raul Lufbery, nurse Helen Fairchild, medic John Henry Balch and African-American Harlem Hellfighter Noble Sissle. These short films are part of the Corps’ global project that aims to give voice to diverse veteran communities irrespective of war or nation, and to examine the challenges (trauma, social stigma, loss of friends) and opportunities (leadership, humour, resilience) of war.
There will also be a pre-screening of two documentaries made more recently in Israel. This is a rare opportunity to view unique and compelling footage and hear seldom-heard perspectives. Bernardi will speak from first-hand experience as a veteran and a Navy Reserve officer. |

The American War is an anti-war documentary that tells the story of the Vietnam War from the perspective of six Việt Cộng veterans: a soldier, an officer, a guerilla, an informant, a leader of the Long-haired (all women) army, and a Mỹ Lai Massacre survivor.
Using rarely seen North Vietnamese archival footage, animated illustrations and interviews filmed at homes, villages and prisons, The American War gives voice and character to Việt Cộng veterans who tell us the reasons behind their decisions to serve. Directed by an American veteran of the Iraq War, Daniel Bernardi, in “The American War”, we hear the stories and memories of the Tet Offensive, of the Mỹ Lai Massacre, the building of the Hồ Chí Minh Trail, of torture by the South Vietnamese army, of PTSD – and of forgiveness. |
