Marlene Dietrich stars as showgirl Lola, the main attraction at The Blue Angel nightclub.  When dour Professor Emmanuel Rath (silent film leading man Emil Jannings) discovers his pupils mooning over saucy postcards of the cabaret star, he is enraged by their depravity. Visiting the club to denounce its louche activities, Professor Rath too is seduced by Lola’s charms, and in turn compromises his own standing.

CELEBRATE WITH US!

It’s our 60th Anniversary! In addition to our usual stellar programme of international cinema, animation, and cult classics, we have a number of special events planned this year:
Celebrations begin on Opening Night with a screening of THE BLUE ANGEL (1930), a film shown during our very first season in 1958. This is open to the public (koha), so bring your friends.  A free drink and snack will be served. Our anniversary theme continues on 5 March with the French comedy MON ONCLE, the 1958 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film.

Raffle tickets go on sale 26 February for two epic prize packs full of film-related goodies and vouchers from local businesses. Be sure to buy your tickets early, as winners will be drawn at our 9 April screening of MUSTANG (2015).
Canterbury Film Society will have a stand this year at the Armageddon Expo over Queen’s Birthday weekend (2–4 June). This is an exciting first! If you’re going, do stop by to say ‘hello’.

A sizzling mid-winter Christmas raffle will also be drawn 25 June.

In August, a Film Quiz will be hosted during the Christchurch International Film Festival. We hope you’ll put a team together and join us. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for dates and more information.
Free events!
This year we have seven events that are open to the public (koha). If you’re curious about our Society, these are perfect opportunities to meet film enthusiasts and discover what we’re about. Diarise these events and bring your friends!

We are on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! Follow us for all the latest information about our screenings, special events, and other film news.
We look forward to celebrating sixty years of cinema with you throughout 2018!

ABOUT US

Canterbury Film Society is a non-profit incorporated society and a registered charitable organisation. CFS is a member of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies, which has been screening films throughout the country for over 70 years. Each year film societies screen to an estimated total combined audience of 2,000 New Zealanders.

Many distinguished and innovative films are never released commercially or shown on television in New Zealand. Film societies specialise in screening these quality films that cannot be seen anywhere else: documentaries, features from around the world, classics, director retrospectives and national cinema seasons. We also showcase selected New Zealand films every year, with the support of the New Zealand Film Commission.

The film society season is programmed each year with the aim of enhancing members’ understanding of world-wide film culture and our country’s place in it. We do this by showing international work of the highest standard, side by side with New Zealand films.
Film Society membership is open to everyone. We operate on an annual subscription basis because (with just a few exceptions) we have non-commercial screening rights, and must screen to members only. Your annual subscription contributes to programming services, venue hire and administration costs.

All film societies are run by committees of volunteers from the general membership. The Canterbury Film Society committee is elected at our AGM in March each year. Current committee members are Dale Deavoll (President), Helen Mann, Dakota Gibbs, Mat Daniel, Michelle Smith and Megumi Woodtli.

We acknowledge the generous assistance of the Embassy of France, the Goethe Institut, Creative New Zealand, the Film Archive and the New Zealand Film Commission.
