REVIEWS

“A lonely young dairy farmer obsessed with his work will stop at nothing to save his cows from the threat of an epidemic that could decimate them in Hubert Charuel’s gripping and personal first feature, Bloody Milk, a solemn take on rural life that intriguingly toys with thriller conventions… The director, born in a dairy farming environment in northeast France, clearly knows the milieu (the film was shot on his parents’ land), capturing the farmer’s exhausting routine with documentary precision. Nervous and a bit taciturn, Arlaud seems unusually comfortable in a milking parlour or cuddling with beasts that appear more and more monstrous as the probability of an epidemic increases.”

– Pamela Pianezza, Variety

“Proud and conscientious young farmer Pierre (Swann Arlaud), discovers that one of his cows may suffer from a form of Mad Cow Disease (FHD in the film). He could lose his herd and his farm if the authorities find out – they’ll slaughter all his cows and partial compensation takes forever. Pierre takes matters into his own hands, but ‘oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive’… First-time feature director, Hubert Charuel, introduces us to a suspenseful ‘agricultural thriller’. Charuel himself grew up on a dairy farm and it was painful for his parents to learn that he wanted to be a filmmaker.”
